Preston’s Bar in Grand Ledge, Michigan has earned the loyalty of many in the community it serves for more than 100 years. The iconic business continues to evolve and grow under the leadership of Vic Preston.

“My great grandparents opened in 1914, and I am now the 4th generation owner,” said Preston. “My parents Lanny and Susan have been running the bar since the early ‘80s. I’ve probably been running it for 10 years now and have been bartending since I was 18.”

Many lessons have been passed down to Preston from family members. He has also learned a lot while operating the iconic bar over the last decade and shared with us his top 4 tips.

  1. Worry about yourself

“It’s nice to know what other businesses are doing and what works for them may work for you too. However, I’ve learned it’s best to just focus on your business and do what you do best.”

  1. Stay true to who you are

“We have been around long enough to realize we are unique in our own way. I think it’s good to stay true to who we are and what we do best. Focus on the things that have worked over the years and don’t stray too far away from that.”

  1. Not broke, don’t fix it

“We have a lot of history and tradition at Preston’s. I’ve found small changes are encouraged and needed. Some things are fine just the way they are, and even though dated, it helps create the atmosphere we want.”

  1. If you don’t love it, leave it

“With our business, if you don’t love what you do, it may not be the best place for you. Family owned and operated businesses require a lot of time. Literally, open everyday. There are very few days off. It’s a huge commitment. You have to be prepared to spend the majority of your day; working, running errands, working on paperwork, beer reps, deliveries, and everything else that comes with running your business.”
